PIREP - Stark Avionics

As numerous of you, I appreciate pireps from those with experience with shops you have (whether positive or negative) and love to pass on my experience for that thought on others at the same time. After a so-so experience after a recent avionics install, I discovered myself seeking an alternate avenue for your installation of a brand new transponder for ADS-B compliance. I called two local shops first. The price of one was high which i actually busted out laughing on the phone like I were at a comedy bar. He was apparently much less amused as I. I was telling the story of my local quote with a friend with the airport anf the husband recommended that I call John Stark at Stark Avionics for a quote. In doing my homework just before calling John, I browsed Mooneyspace and BT for pireps for the shop. In this, I ran across an absolutely terrible pirep on Stark Avionics. (Search in BT if you would like to learn it). This pirep caused me serious concern about whether or not to call Stark to get a quote.

I posted a general query for recommendations on an avionics shop and received another recommendation for Stark from another MSer (Oldguy). He and I spoke regarding his exposure to Stark and that i chose to give John a call based on the two recommendations I from trusted sources. I was open with John regarding my concerns relating to the negative pirep on MS cheap I had been gun shy using the previous experience. As they always say, there's 2 sides to each story and John took his time and energy to explain his side if you ask me like me certain he'll be willing to employ other people who would like to phone him constantly and need rest. Our conversation shifted in the pirep to pricing. John i discussed different equipment options, what might work best with my needs/wants along with the predetermined fee installed price for each option. We ultimately thought we would install the Stratus ESGi for ADS-B in/out. John quoted us a soft price, but was up front that the number may be slightly higher if the tray was riveted in (as many Mooneys are). I attended the airport that night, took pictures and confirmed that my trays were along with screws and forwarded those pictures to John. John responded in a really timely manner and confirmed the flat rate price for that equipment and install in writing so we scheduled the install date and pickup date. The plane ended up being to be delivered the Sunday after Thanksgiving. John said however have everything ready by Tuesday, on the other hand opted to schedule the pickup for Wednesday in the event that there was some snags as you go along.
